new         JOBS OFFERS:

  1.  Postodctoral  position  at UAM  to work in the MareNostrum Numerical Cosmology Project (MNCP).
A  2 year  postdoc position to work in  high redshift  cosmological  numerical simulations  at UAM,  under the MNCP collaboration  is offered  starting in 2010,  The interested candidates should contact me by email and send a CV, research interests  and arrange for 3 letters of refences.   Net  salary  is of the order of  2000 euros/month. The position will be open until it is fullfilled.

Pre-doctoral fellowship  at  UAM  to work in the MareNostrum Numerical Cosmology Project (MNCP).

A 4 year  PhD fellowship  is offered to do a PhD in computational cosmology under my supervision.  This fellowship is called Becas de Formacion Personal Investigador, and they are  offered by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion (MICINN) to selected research projects. The next call will be open in January 2010 and is expected to last for a small period of time, so  interested candidates would be to contact me as soon as possible. Applications are open to any nationality; but if you are citizen of a country not belonging to the European Union you are not allowed to sign any contract until you obtain the compulsory documentation required to live and work in Spain (Visa, Residence Permit, Waiver of the Work Permit). Note that this could  take several months.  The  application has to be done directly from the MICINN web page. Look  there for further  information on how to apply to these grants.

PROFESIONAL    SITUATION

I am a permament profesor of the Departamento de Física Teórica at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid . I belong to the Grupo de Astrofísica and to the Theoretical Astroparticle Group

TEACHING DUTIES

I have  taught  the following  undergraduate courses during the past years

 Mathematical Methods for Physicists

Cosmology II (Physical Cosmology)

I am  currently teaching an undergraduate  course on

         Introduction to Computational  Methods.

I was also  the Coordinator of the  Doctorate Program in  Cosmology and  Astrophysics  at UAM from 2001-2006 and was  teaching a graduate course on   Large Scale Structure  and Galaxy formation.

I am  currently  involved in the development of the new MSc Program in Astrophysics, a joint  academic  program of  the two main Public Universities of  Madrid (UCM and UAM) .  Starting 2006-2007 I am teaching a graduate course in    Computational Astrophysics

RESEARCH     INTERESTS

My main research interest is   Cosmological Numerical SImulation..
I am currently involved in international collaborations  to perform Grand Challenge simulations of the Local Universe and the Universe at high-z:

    new THE CLUES PROJECT

The main goal of the CLUES (Constrained Local UniversE Simulations) project is to provide constrained simulations of the local universe designed to be used as a numerical laboratory of the current paradigm. The simulations will be used for unprecedented analysis of the complex dark matter and gasdynamical processes which govern the formation of galaxies.

new THE MARENOSTRUM NUMERICAL COSMOLOGY PROJECT

MNCP is an international  collaboration  to perform grand-challenge simulations  of galaxy and structure formation in the Universe  using  the MareNostrum Supercomputer

Here is a very nice pictureof the gas distribution for 0.5 critical density contour and temperature of the faint hot gas around the halos in a 5 Mpc box This is part of a cosmological simulation of a Cold Dark Matter model with non-vanishing cosmological constant. It is worth to look at it

You can get the postscript files of my first lectures on numerical simulations (10+ years ago) given at the  two Summer Schools  about Cosmological Numerical Simulations

If you are interested in my research work, you can take a look to the viewgraphs of some talks I have given about numerical simulations at the

  • 1997 Potsdam Cosmology Workshop. "Large Scale Structure in the Universe"
  • 1998 Aspen  Winter Workshop on  Universal Star Formation
  • 2006  The MareNostrum Universe
  • 2006 ESAC-GRID Workshop: Cosmological SImulations of the Universe and it computational challenges.
  • 2007. International Conference on X-ray Surveys. Rodos Island Greece

  • ..Or take a look to the  papers we have published on this subject: UPDATE LIST OF PUBICATIONS FROM ADS

I am always looking for good students willing to do a PhD in numerical cosmology. There are possibilities of financial assitance through fellowships offered by the Spanish Ministry of Education (MECD) and also from European Marie Curie Training Grants.
Postdoctoral fellowships from MECD for recently graduated non-spanish doctors are also possible. These fellowship can be extended to a maximum period of 18 months. Anyone interested can contact me by
    e-mail
