PROFESIONAL    SITUATION

I am a full professor at the Departamento de Física Teórica at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid . I belong to the Grupo de Astrofísica and to the Theoretical Astroparticle Group

I am a member of Centro de Investigacion Avanzada en Fisica Fundamental (CIAFF) and also a research associate of the Center for Computational Simulation (CCS)

TEACHING DUTIES

I have  taught  the following  undergraduate courses during the past years

Cosmology II (Physical Cosmology)

Introduction to Computational  Methods.

I am  currently teaching an undergraduate  course for 2nd year Physics degree on COMPUTATION

I was also  the Coordinator of the  Doctorate Program in  Cosmology and  Astrophysics  at UAM from 2001-2006 and was  teaching a graduate course on   Large Scale Structure  and Galaxy formation.

I was   involved in the MSc Program in Astrophysics, a joint  academic  program of  the two main Public Universities of  Madrid (UCM and UAM) that, unfortunately, has come to an end in 2012.  Since 2006-2007 I am teaching a graduate course in    Computational Astrophysics
and galaxy formation.

Since 2013, the Master in Astrophysics at UAM has merged with the Master in Theoretical Physics. I am teaching in two of the master courses: Computational Astrophysics and Advanced Cosmology, in which I am the coordinator.

RESEARCH     INTERESTS

My main research interest is   Cosmological Numerical Simulations..
I am currently involved in several international collaborations  to perform Grand Challenge cosmo simulations at different scales: from the Local Universe to the Universe at high-z:

    new THE JUBILEE PROJECT

    new THE MULTIDARK PROJECT

    new THE MUSIC PROJECT

    new THE CLUES PROJECT

The main goal of the CLUES (Constrained Local UniversE Simulations) project is to provide constrained simulations of the local universe designed to be used as a numerical laboratory of the current paradigm. The simulations will be used for unprecedented analysis of the complex dark matter and gasdynamical processes which govern the formation of galaxies.

    new THE CURIE-HighZ PROJECT

new THE MARENOSTRUM NUMERICAL COSMOLOGY PROJECT

MNCP is an international  collaboration  to perform grand-challenge simulations  of galaxy and structure formation in the Universe  using  the MareNostrum Supercomputer and other european supercomputers from PRACE consortium .

Here is a very nice pictureof the gas distribution for 0.5 critical density contour and temperature of the faint hot gas around the halos in a 5 Mpc box This is part of a cosmological simulation of a Cold Dark Matter model with non-vanishing cosmological constant. It is worth to look at it

  • 2006 ESAC-GRID Workshop: Cosmological SImulations of the Universe and it computational challenges.

  • You can get the postscript files of my first lectures on numerical simulations (15+ years ago) given at the  two Summer Schools  about Cosmological Numerical Simulations

I am always looking for good students willing to do a PhD in numerical cosmology. There are possibilities of financial assitance through fellowships offered by the Spanish Ministry of Education (MECD) and also from European Marie Curie Training Grants.
Postdoctoral fellowships from MECD for recently graduated non-spanish doctors are also possible. These fellowship can be extended to a maximum period of 18 months. Anyone interested can contact me by
    e-mail
